Costco's history dates back to 1976 when Sol Price opened the first Price Club in a converted airplane hangar on Morena Blvd, in San Diego, CA. In 1983, James Sinegal and Jeffrey Brotman opened the first Costco in Seattle, Washington. Costco became the first company ever to grow from zero to $3 billion in sales in less than six years.
Early history
- Price Club was the world's first membership warehouse club, but it was originally only open to small businesses
- In 1983, James Sinegal and Jeffrey Brotman helped Price Club expand to include non-business members and opened the first Costco in Seattle, Washington
- In 1993, Price Club and Costco merged to form PriceCostco, which had 206 locations generating $16 billion in annual sales
- In 1997, the company changed its name to Costco Companies, Inc. and has grown worldwide with total sales exceeding $64 billion
- In 1999, the company adopted its current name, Costco Wholesale Corporation
Today, as the company evolves, it stays true to the qualities that helped attract and retain millions of loyal members around the globe. I've been a Price Club/Costco member since the '80s and love how they have evolved over the years.
